When a person is arrested, the magistrate will send bail and/or bond for the inmate. For example, if it is set at $5,000 cash/$10,000 bond, you have two options.

CASH BAIL. In this instance, you can pay $5000 to the Court and the defendant will be released. Once his/her case is resolved, you will get your $5000 refunded to you, less any fees and/or fines. The case may take several months to fully resolve.

BOND. In this instance, you can hire a bail bondsman to post the $10,000 bond for you. You will be charged 15% of the bond amount, which is $1500. You do not get this money back. As long as the defendant attends all court dates, you will owe nothing more. IF any court date is missed, you will be responsible to pay the full $10,000. Collateral may also be required, depending on the situation.
